Online Therapy in Waukegan That Feels Personal, Not Corporate
Anxiety can look like nonstop what-ifs, irritability you cannot explain, a tight chest that shows up at the worst times, or a sudden wave of panic that convinces you something is seriously wrong. If any of that sounds familiar, Online Therapy in Waukegan can be a steady, supportive place to sort through what is happening and learn practical ways to feel safer in your body and mind.
Montesano Psychological Center is a small, women-owned virtual practice serving Illinois. We built our care model for people who are tired of being treated like a number. With Online Therapy in Waukegan, you can meet from home, from your car on a break, or from anywhere private, and still feel a real connection with a clinician who remembers your story. If you want to get a feel for who we are, you can start at Montesano Psychological Center and see how our “Small Team. Small Caseloads. Big Care.” approach shows up in the details.
What Anxiety Can Feel Like Day to Day
Anxiety is not just “worrying a lot.” It can affect your thoughts, your body, your emotions, and your behavior. Many people reach out for Online Therapy in Waukegan after they notice anxiety starting to shrink their life, even if everything looks “fine” from the outside.

- Persistent worry that is hard to control
- Racing thoughts, overthinking, or mental replaying of conversations

Common physical symptoms
- Chest tightness, shortness of breath, or a lump in the throat
- Stomach discomfort, nausea, or appetite changes

- Rapid heartbeat, sweating, shaking, or dizziness during high anxiety
Common behavior patterns

If you see yourself in this list, Online Therapy in Waukegan can help you slow the spiral and build skills that work in the moment, not just in theory.
Why Anxiety Happens, and Why It Can Stick Around
Anxiety is often your brain and body trying to protect you, even when the alarm system is misfiring. Sometimes it starts after a stressful season, a medical scare, a loss, a breakup, or a major change. Other times it has been there for as long as you can remember. Online Therapy in Waukegan can help you make sense of the “why” without blaming yourself.
Some common contributors include:
- Biology and temperament, including a naturally sensitive nervous system
- Family patterns, such as growing up around chronic stress, conflict, or unpredictable caregiving
- Trauma and chronic stress, including experiences that taught your body to stay on guard
- Health, sleep, and lifestyle factors, where fatigue, caffeine, pain, or hormonal shifts amplify anxiety
- Thought habits, like catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, or over-responsibility
Therapy does not require you to “prove” your anxiety is valid. With Online Therapy in Waukegan, we can work with what you are experiencing right now, and also explore the roots at a pace that feels safe.
Online Therapy in Waukegan for Different Types of Anxiety
“Anxiety” is an umbrella term. The right treatment depends on how it shows up for you. Online Therapy in Waukegan at MPC is individualized, not one-size-fits-all.
Generalized anxiety, when worry becomes the background noise
Generalized anxiety often feels like your mind is scanning for problems all day. You might be managing work, family, or school, yet still feel restless and unable to relax. Online Therapy in Waukegan can help you reduce the intensity of worry, set boundaries with overthinking, and build confidence in your ability to handle uncertainty.
Social anxiety, when being seen feels risky
Social anxiety is not a character flaw, and it is not simply “being shy.” It can include fear of embarrassment, intense self-criticism, and avoidance that impacts friendships, dating, presentations, or even quick errands. Online Therapy in Waukegan can help you practice new ways of relating to your thoughts, build self-trust, and gradually expand your comfort zone without feeling pushed.
Panic symptoms, when your body hits the alarm button
Panic can be terrifying, especially when it feels like it comes out of nowhere. Many people then start fearing the fear itself, which can lead to more avoidance and more panic. Online Therapy in Waukegan can help you understand panic physiology, learn grounding tools, and reduce the fear loop over time. For a helpful public health overview of anxiety and stress, you can also visit the CDC mental health resources page.
How We Treat Anxiety, Evidence-Based Care With Real-Life Compassion
At MPC, every therapist is clinically supervised by Dr. Liara Montesano to support consistent quality and thoughtful care. Online Therapy in Waukegan is provided through a secure telehealth platform, and sessions are designed to feel collaborative, practical, and grounded.
Depending on your needs, we may use:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you notice patterns between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In Online Therapy in Waukegan, CBT often includes learning how to challenge catastrophic predictions, reduce avoidance, and practice new coping behaviors that teach your brain you can handle discomfort. If you want to read more about this approach, explore Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Sometimes anxiety gets louder when we fight it. ACT focuses on building psychological flexibility, so anxious thoughts can be present without running your decisions. Online Therapy in Waukegan using ACT can be especially helpful if you feel stuck in cycles of trying to control your mind. You can learn more about this style of work on our Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) page.
DBT skills for emotion regulation and distress tolerance
When anxiety comes with big emotional waves, DBT skills can be a lifeline. Online Therapy in Waukegan may include strategies for riding out intense sensations, reducing vulnerability (sleep, nutrition, routines), and building mindfulness that actually works when you are activated. For additional context, visit Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Trauma-informed and relational therapy
If anxiety is connected to past experiences, therapy should never feel like you are being forced to relive them. Online Therapy in Waukegan at MPC can include trauma-informed pacing, nervous system education, and relational support that strengthens safety and trust.
What Makes Montesano Psychological Center Different
There are many options for virtual counseling. We built MPC to be the opposite of impersonal, high-volume care. Online Therapy in Waukegan with us includes a few promises we take seriously.
A licensed clinician answers the phone
When you are anxious, even reaching out can feel like a lot. At MPC, you do not have to navigate a phone tree or explain yourself to a receptionist. Online Therapy in Waukegan starts with a real conversation, with someone who understands mental health and can help you think through next steps.
Small caseloads, because your therapist needs capacity
We intentionally keep caseloads small so your therapist can show up prepared, present, and steady. Online Therapy in Waukegan should not feel rushed or cookie-cutter. You deserve care that makes room for your complexity.
Thoughtful matching, and easy reassignment if it is not the right fit
The relationship matters. We match you based on concerns, schedule, preferences, and personality fit. If it does not click, Online Therapy in Waukegan can continue with a different clinician, no judgment, no awkwardness.
